Koh Ta Kiev is a small, mostly untouched island off the southern coast of Cambodia. Twenty kilometers from Sihanoukville, an hour by longtail boat from Otres Beach, and yet — somehow — still one of Southeast Asia's best-kept secrets.
This is the definitive guide. Everything we wish travelers knew before they came: where the island is, how to get there, when to go, where to stay, what to do, what to eat, what to pack, and how to be a thoughtful visitor. Written by Kactus, the off-grid eco-lodge that's been calling Koh Ta Kiev home for years.
Where Koh Ta Kiev Is
Koh Ta Kiev sits in the Gulf of Thailand, about 10 kilometers off Otres Beach in Sihanoukville Province. The island is small — you can walk its full length in a few hours — and divided in feel between a developed-but-still-minimal east side facing the mainland, and a quieter, mostly empty west side facing the sunset. Kactus is on the sunset side.
Despite its proximity to Sihanoukville, the island feels remarkably remote. There are no roads, no cars, no shops in the usual sense. Power runs off solar. Water comes from wells. The pace is set by the tides, the boats, and the daylight.
How to Get to Koh Ta Kiev
The journey breaks down into three legs, depending on where you're starting from.
From Phnom Penh
Bus or van to Sihanoukville (4-5 hours, $12-$18 USD), then tuk-tuk to Otres Beach (15 minutes, $3-$5 USD), then longtail boat to the island (~1 hour). Total: 5-6 hours door to door. Companies like Giant Ibis, Larryta Express, and Virak Buntham handle the bus leg.
From Siem Reap
Domestic flight to Sihanoukville (1 hour, $80-$150 USD) or overnight bus (10-12 hours, $20-$30 USD), then continue as above. Most travelers fly.
From Sihanoukville Airport
Tuk-tuk or taxi directly to Otres Beach (~30 minutes, $10-$15 USD), then the longtail.
The boat to the island
Scheduled boat transfers from Otres Beach are now included in your nightly stay at Kactus. The ride takes about an hour, passing Bamboo Island and Elephant Rock along the way. The boat departs at set times each day — once you've confirmed your reservation, we'll share the current schedule with you.
When to Visit
Cambodia has two seasons: dry (November to April) and wet (May to October).
Dry season (November–April)
The most popular time to visit. Clear skies, calm seas, low humidity. Days are warm (28-32°C / 82-90°F), nights are pleasant. December through February sees the most travelers. If you want peak conditions but quieter beaches, aim for November or April.
Wet season (May–October)
Don't write it off. Rain comes in short, intense bursts — usually afternoon — and clears quickly. Mornings and evenings are often beautiful. The island is greener, less crowded, and rates are lower. Sea conditions can occasionally cancel boats in heavy weather, so build flexibility into your dates.
Best months overall for first-time visitors: November, December, January, February, March.
Where to Stay
Koh Ta Kiev has only a handful of accommodations, ranging from budget dorms to private bungalows. Choosing where to stay shapes your whole experience.
Kactus (where we are)
Off-grid eco-lodge on the sunset side. Wooden bungalows from beachfront treehouses with private bathrooms to budget dorms. All-inclusive wellness packages with daily yoga, sauna, ice bath, and Khmer-Western fusion meals. Best for travelers who want to genuinely disconnect.
Other properties on the island
There are a few other small operations on Koh Ta Kiev — most are simple bungalow setups. The island is small enough that you can visit each side during a longer stay. Travel forums like Travelfish and Move To Cambodia keep updated reviews of what's currently operating.
Things to Do on Koh Ta Kiev
Walk the beach
Kactus's beach runs roughly a kilometer along the west side, mostly empty. A morning walk before the sun is high is one of the simplest pleasures of the island.
Swim and snorkel
The water is clear and warm year-round. Snorkeling around Bamboo Island and the rocks near Elephant Rock can be excellent — bring or rent a mask. Bioluminescent plankton sometimes appears in the bay at night.
Yoga, sauna, and wellness practices
Kactus runs daily yoga, meditation, qi gong, sauna and ice bath sessions, sound healing, flow arts, and occasional jewelry-making workshops. You can join any of them as part of a package, or add them à la carte to a room booking.
Explore on foot
There are trails crossing the island — talk to your accommodation about which are walkable and bring water. The island is small enough that getting truly lost is hard.
Read, write, and do nothing
The most popular activity on Koh Ta Kiev, honestly. There's a reason people travel an hour by boat to get here.
What to Eat
Food on the island is what your accommodation serves you. There are no separate restaurants, no convenience stores, no shops.
At Kactus, we run a small kitchen that does Khmer and Western fusion — breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus snacks. Buddha bowls, fresh juices, fish caught locally, vegetables from the mainland boats. We can adapt to most dietary preferences with a few days' notice.
If you have specific allergies or strict dietary needs (gluten-free, vegan, etc.), message us before you arrive so we can plan.
What to Pack
The short version:
• Cash in USD or Khmer riel (no ATMs on the island)
• Dry bag or waterproof phone pouch
• Reef-safe sunscreen
• Insect repellent
• Reusable water bottle
• Headlamp or flashlight
• Light, quick-dry clothing
• Light rain jacket (wet season)
• Basic first-aid items
• Your passport
We have a separate detailed packing guide if you want the full list.
Practical Information
Money
Cambodia runs on US dollars day-to-day, with riels used for small change. No ATMs on the island — bring everything you'll need plus a buffer.
Electricity and connectivity
Power on Koh Ta Kiev is solar. Most bungalows have outlets, but think of charging as a shared resource — bring a power bank. Wi-Fi is limited and slow by design. If you need to be reachable, your phone with a Cambodian SIM (Smart, Cellcard) usually works on the east-facing parts of the island.
Visas
Most travelers get a Cambodia e-visa online before arrival ($36 USD, valid 30 days). Land borders and airports also issue visas on arrival. Bring a passport-sized photo just in case.
Health
No vaccinations are required for Cambodia, but check standard travel recommendations with your doctor. Drink only filtered or bottled water — we provide filtered water at Kactus.
Safety
Koh Ta Kiev is very safe. Use normal travel sense — keep valuables locked, don't swim impaired, watch your skin in the sun.
Sustainability on the Island
Small Cambodian islands are fragile. Coral bleaching, plastic accumulation, and over-development on neighboring islands have happened fast in the last decade. A few simple things make a big difference:
• Bring a reusable bottle and refill it
• Use reef-safe sunscreen
• Take all single-use plastic off the island when you leave
• Support operations running on solar, filtering water, and working with local fishermen and farmers
• Don't pick coral, don't feed wildlife, don't leave trash on the beach
Your booking with sustainable operators is what keeps them viable. The smaller the property, often the more careful they are — that's our experience after years on this island.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koh Ta Kiev safe for solo travelers?
Yes. Many of our guests are solo travelers, especially women on wellness retreats. The island has a strong community vibe and very low crime.
Is there mobile signal?
Patchy. Smart and Cellcard work better than international roaming. Don't plan on doing serious work from here.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes — Kactus welcomes families. Some bungalows have queen + bunk bed layouts that sleep four. We have an active retreat schedule though, so this isn't a kid-focused property; just check with us about what's running during your dates.
Is it suitable for honeymoons?
Particularly. We have private treehouse and beachfront bungalows with sea views (Honeymoon Castle, Hornbill, My Paradise) — quiet, romantic, off-grid.
How long should I stay?
Two nights is a taste, three to four is the sweet spot, a week is when the island really gets under your skin. Anything less than two nights and you've spent more time traveling than being on the island.
Can I extend my stay last-minute?
Usually yes, subject to availability. The island has a way of changing people's plans — we're used to it.
