How to Get to Koh Ta Kiev from Phnom Penh: The Complete 2026 Guide

Koh Ta Kiev is one of Cambodia's last truly unspoiled islands — a quiet, off-grid escape just off the southern coast. The good news: getting here from Phnom Penh is easier than it looks. The journey takes roughly 4 to 6 hours door-to-door.

Here's exactly how to do it, plus the small details that make the difference between a smooth arrival and a stressful one.

The Quick Answer

Phnom Penh → Sihanoukville (bus or van, ~4 hours) → Otres Beach (tuk-tuk, 20 minutes) → Koh Ta Kiev (longtail boat, ~1 hour). Total travel time: 5–6 hours. Total cost: roughly $25–$45 USD depending on your transport choices.

Step 1: Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville

This is the longest leg. You have four real options:

Sleeper Bus or Express Van (Recommended)

Companies like Giant Ibis, Larryta Express, and Virak Buntham run multiple departures daily from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. Express vans take 4 hours, sleeper buses around 5. Tickets cost $12–$18 USD and can be booked online via 12Go Asia or Bookaway. We recommend a morning departure so you arrive in Otres with daylight to spare for the boat.

Train

Royal Railway runs a Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville train on weekends and select weekdays. The ride takes around 7 hours — slower than the bus but more scenic and stable. Tickets are around $7–$10 USD.

Private Taxi

Roughly $80–$120 USD for the full ride, 3.5–4 hours. Best for groups of 3–4 sharing the cost, or if you're arriving late and need flexibility.

Domestic Flight

Cambodia Angkor Air and other carriers fly Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in about 45 minutes. Flights cost $60–$120 USD one-way. Only worth it if you're tight on time or carrying heavy luggage.

Step 2: Sihanoukville to Otres Beach

Once you're in Sihanoukville, you need to get to Otres Beach — the launch point for our boat. It's about 10–15 minutes by tuk-tuk and costs $3–$5 USD. PassApp and Grab both work in Sihanoukville if you prefer a metered ride.

Tip: tell the driver "Otres 1" or "Otres Beach near the longtail boats." That's where you'll meet the Kactus boat.

Step 3: Otres Beach to Koh Ta Kiev by Longtail Boat

This is the part that turns the trip into an adventure. A traditional wooden longtail boat takes around 1 hour to cross to the island, passing Bamboo Island and Elephant Rock along the way.

Great news — boat transfers are now included in your nightly stay at Kactus. No extra fee, no separate booking. Once you've confirmed your reservation, we'll share the boat schedule and meeting point with you directly.

Scheduled departures run daily. If you arrive in Otres outside boat hours, there are simple guesthouses where you can spend the night and catch the morning crossing.

What to Pack for the Journey

Koh Ta Kiev is off-grid, so a little preparation goes a long way:

• A small dry bag or waterproof phone pouch — the boat ride can splash.

• Cash in USD or Khmer riel. There are no ATMs on the island.

• A reusable water bottle. We provide filtered refill stations at Kactus.

• A light rain jacket if you're traveling in monsoon season (May–October).

• A book, a notebook, or whatever helps you unplug. There's limited Wi-Fi on the island by design.

Arriving at Kactus

When your longtail boat rounds the headland and the beach opens up, you'll see the wooden treehouses, the sauna deck, and our main lounge under the trees. A team member will meet you at the shore, give you a welcome speech of the spaces, and offer a cold welcome drink.

From here, the schedule is whatever you want it to be. Sunrise yoga, sauna and ice bath, a swim, a buddha bowl, a long walk down the 1 km of empty beach. This is where the journey ends — and where the real reason you came starts.
